Start with common letters
Words that test several common letters at once, such as CRANE, SLATE or TRACE, tell you a lot from the first row. Avoid repeating a letter in your opening guess.
Read the clue against the colours
The first clue is broad on purpose. Combine it with your coloured tiles: if the clue says “a kitchen tool” and you have an amber K, think KNIFE before you think anything else.
Save clues for real dead ends
Each star is separate. Taking one extra clue still leaves two stars within reach, so use one when you are truly stuck rather than spending guesses blindly.
Groups: find the narrowest link first
Look for a category that only four words can fit, such as words before BALL. Then look for the decoy: the fifth word that seems to fit a group but belongs elsewhere.
Groups: use “one away”
If the game says one away, keep three of the words and swap one. Shuffle the board to see the words in a new order.
